Description:

APCO Institute’s Supervisor Illuminations program is an annual subscription-based service that allows you to obtain topic-specific, at-your-desk continuing education.

Supervisor Illuminations includes monthly topics of particular interest to managers and supervisors at ECCs, although the track is open to anyone. Subscribers earn one CDE for each monthly course completed for a total of up to 12 CDE hours for the year.

July: Culture of Excellence: Reinforcing Standards through Positive Accountability
Join us this month as we explore positive accountability in ECC leadership, not as punishment, but as a consistent standard of professionalism, fairness, and doing what’s right. This course will show leaders practical tools for reinforcing expectations, recognizing strong performance, and addressing concerns early before they become bigger issues. We’ll also present simple, budget-friendly ways to build morale through appreciation, consistency, and team-focused accountability.
August: Time Under Pressure: Prioritization & Time Management for ECC Leaders
Join us this month as we focus on time management and prioritization for ECC leaders. This course offers practical strategies for managing competing demands, reducing common “time traps,” and making confident real-time decisions during busy shifts. We’ll also review delegation, shift planning, and ways and ideas to stay focused without losing connection with your team.
September: Leading with Consistency: Policy and Procedure Management in ECC Supervision
Join us this month as we focus on policy consistency across shifts. This course helps ECC leaders identify policy gaps, reduce “gray areas,” and build a unified approach so expectations remain fair, clear, and consistent. You’ll also be shown practical strategies for leader collaboration, transparency, and reinforcing procedures without micromanagement.
October: Navigating Transition: Managing Change in ECC Communications
Join us this month as we explore managing change in an ECC communications center. This course provides practical strategies for communicating change clearly, supporting staff through transitions, and handling resistance in a professional, productive way. Leaders will be shown tools to maintain morale, consistency, and accountability as procedures and expectations evolve.
November: Refuel Your Leadership: Overcoming the “Rut” in Emergency Communications
Join us this month as we explore what it means to feel stuck in a rut in ECC leadership. This course offers practical tools for recognizing early signs of stagnation, rebuilding motivation, and finding renewed purpose through goal-setting, reflection, and professional growth. Leaders will be shown strategies to regain momentum and re-engage with the work in a meaningful way.
December: Motivating the Shift: Practical Recognition Tools for ECC Leaders
Join us this month as we focus on employee recognition in ECC supervision. This course shows practical, budget-friendly ways to recognize performance, strengthen morale, and support teamwork. Leaders are shown ways of how to use recognition consistently, both publicly and privately, to build a healthier, more motivated shift culture.
