APCO Institute’s EMD Illuminations program is and annual subscription-based service that allows you to obtain topic-specific, at-your-desk continuing education.
EMD Illuminations includes monthly topics of particular interest to emergency medical dispatchers, although the track is open to anyone. Subscribers earn one CDE for each.
2019 Topics Include:
Ketamine, known on the street as Special K, is a primarily used for starting and maintaining anesthesia. When administered, patients enter a state of unconsciousness. Paramedics may administer ketamine for pain relief or sedation. Ketamine is also used outside of medical treatment as a hallucinogenic. This session will focus on interacting with Ketamine under both circumstances.
This session will focus on various types of bio-hazard incidents the EMD may be called upon to process. This will include, along with others, blister agents, nerve agents whether natural or weaponized.
||Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement and the EMD
Call review, evaluation, and feedback are important components of Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement for the EMD. This session includes information on standardized methods of application found in APCO’s Quality Assurance/Improvement National Standard, as well actions that the EMD can take to maintain or improve their call-handling/EMD skills.
Baseball is the all-American sport, however like many other sports it is not free from injuries. This course will focus on various types of injuries from baseball and softball.
||It’s Allergy Season!
While allergy seasons differ in various parts of the country, tree, flower, grass, and pollen cause health problems for millions of people. This session provides information on various types of allergies, the signs/symptoms, and emergency situations that can arise from allergens.
||Current trends in narcotics
Each year there seems to be a new “popular” illicit narcotic spreading across the nation. This session will focus on the currently popular narcotics.
Tuberculosis is an infectious disease that affects the patients’ lungs, although it may also affect The bacteria usually attack the lungs, but may also affect the kidney, spine, and brain. Tuberculosis is the second biggest killer, globally, when compared with other diseases caused by a single infectious agent. In fact, one fourth of the world’s population is infected with TB. In 2016, 10.4 million people around the world became sick with TB disease, and there were 1.7 million TB-related deaths worldwide.
The study of martial arts is never without risk. With more of the public turning to martial arts for personal self-defense, as well as juveniles studying for proficiency the EMD is being called upon to handle various injuries that are inherent to martial arts.
||Managing the Call
Gaining initial control of the call/caller is vital to obtaining pertinent and accurate information. This session explores types of difficult callers, such as hysterical, intoxicated, confused, and abusive. The use of calming techniques, active listening, and ways to facilitate proper information gathering are discussed.
||Friday Night Lights
It's the time of year when attention is focused on the Friday Night Lights for football. This session will address the types of injuries the EMD may encounter from football and cheerleading injuries.
Stabbings, knifing, sword and machete attacks are all increasing in frequency. These types of attacks bring a myriad of injuries, and thus session will focus on the EMDs role in call processing these injuries.
Far too often the EMD is tasked with interacting with psychiatric problems ranging from suicidal individuals to paranoid Schizophrenic patients. This course will focus on these interactions as well as cues the EMD can rely upon to guide their interactions.
