CTO experience or certification is recommended

The CTO track of the Illuminations Program provides at-your-desk continuing education for agency CTOs, trainers and other interested individuals. The program is offered as an annual subscription-based service and includes 4 online courses per year – taught quarterly by APCO Institute adjunct instructors. Courses delve into topics of specific interest to CTOs and others with training responsibilities. They can be accessed from any computer with Internet access. Topic selections change each year.

Each 3-month-long course allows participants to earn three (3) CDE hours, for a total of 12 CDEs per subscription year.

2019 Topics Include:

January: Tightening Your DOR Category Definitions and Evaluation Guidelines
This session will look in-depth at each section of the daily observation report (DOR). Each category on the DOR has a definition on the SEG, and this session will look at those definitions in comparison to the CTOs subjective understanding of the category. Additionally, this session will focus on the writing, or re-writing, of agency Standardized Evaluation Guidelines to ensure standardized interpretation of the guidelines by all CTOs.
April: Achieving Standardization Thru Calibration
The leading complaint of new hire employees is a lack of standardization in the training process, including each CTO having their own interpretation of what is required to obtain acceptable ratings on the daily observation report. This session will focus on elements to be incorporated into your training program to ensure that training is delivered in a uniform order and that each of the CTOs are interpreting the DOR categories and SEGs.
July: Relevant Documentation of Trainee Performance
This session will explore the importance of appropriate documentation required for trainee performance evaluations. Objective vs subjective verbiage will be discussed, along with suggestions for documenting "acceptable", "unacceptable", and "superior" trainee performance. A review of the ratings and comments sections of the Daily Observation Report (DOR) will include practice documentation based on sample calls for service. The use of a Trainee Tracking Sheet will be also discussed.
October: Feedback and Counseling for Your Trainees
Providing the trainee with comprehensive feedback about their performance is essential to their success. This session will examine the importance of timely feedback and how to counsel, coach, and mentor the trainee. Ideas for developing performance improvement goals during counseling sessions will also be reviewed.
